Disabled Facilities Grants

A Disabled Facilities Grant is a grant from your local council to help towards the cost of adapting your home to enable you to continue to live there. The grant is paid if your council considers that the proposed changes are necessary to meet your needs, and that the work is both reasonable and practical.

Who can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant

You can apply if the answer to the following four statements is yes:

  • You or someone living in your property, is disabled.
  • You, or a person on whose behalf you are applying, are the owner or tenant of the property. Note: a landlord may apply on behalf of a disabled tenant.
  • Your willing to certify that you, or the person on whose behalf you are applying, intend to occupy the property as your/their main or only residence throughout the 5 year grant period.
  • You live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Note: Scottish residents should contact their local social services department for information on any available grants.

How can a Disabled Facilities Grant be used?

Disabled Facilities Grants can, following an Occupational Therapy Recommendation Report, be used to adapt the home to provide someone with a disability access to essential facilities, for example:

  • Access to the property: widening doors- ramps –step lifts etc.
  • Access throughout the home: widening doors.
  • Access to first floor facilities: stair lifts-rails.
  • Access to safe washing facilities: installation of showers.
  • Provision of a downstairs toilet.
  • Access to essential cooking facilities: adaptation to the kitchen.
  • Adaptations to lighting: provision of additional lighting – re positioning of light and electrical controls to provide improved access.

How much will you get?

The amount of grant you receive is based on a financial assessment – means tested. Your income, savings and outgoings are all taken into account when assessing your award.

There is no guarantee that all applicants will be eligible for a grant.

Grants vary from 0% to 100% of the cost of the adaptation.

Grants can be awarded up to a maximum of £30,000, the amount dependent on the cost of the adaptation.

Sources of alternative funding

If you are not eligible for a grant to fund your adaptation there are other organisations that can sometimes help. If you look on our links page you will find contact details for some of these organisations.
